Painting Out at Linger Lodge
Plein air & Taxidermy
We painted out at Linger Lodge today in Bradenton. It was gorgeous out as you can see. The grounds have so many perfect spots for painting and we’ve been out there many times with Light Chasers our local Sarasota plein air group.
I DID A COUPLE QUICK STUDIES OF THE HIGH MORNING LIGHT OF THE SWAMPY POND AND WE HEADED IN TO THE AMAZING LODGE FOR LUNCH —
WHICH IS ALWAYS OUR FAVORITE PART — BUT NOT BEFORE SHIRLEY ALMOST TOOK A DRINK OF HER BRUSH CLEANER.
I think she might’ve actually done it, which would explain the full on conversation she had with that stuffed fox (Alice in Wonderland style). We thought it looked like pink lemonade or even a cosmo, I wanted to put a twist of lime on the rim.
I was teasing her because there was nothing, absolutely nothing pink out there but that never stops her. It’s her favorite color and by god she’s going to put some damn pink in the painting regardless. (In fairness it was probably her underpainting which always looks amazing 😉).
Linger Lodge is this incredibly cool place with stuffed dead animals all over the place. Above us on the wall they had Linger Lodge spelled out in dead snakes. I know you just said, “Cool” under your breath. Whoever’s idea that was needs a promotion.
Locals love this little hide away. Of course I photographed it all for you. Thank me later. I wish I could’ve gotten better detail on those snakes for you. There’s this really nice screened in deck that looks out over the property. If you’re into eating amongst a graveyard of taxidermied animals, (and who isn’t?) This is your place.
It’s quite a drive for us to paint up there but it’s worth it. It’s always difficult for us to concentrate on painting after about 2 hours because we’re like, “Do you want to stop and go to lunch now?” Today we weren't even out there that long or I would've gotten more than this little painting done. It's always hard to keep painting in the Florida heat when you want to break for lunch but at this place the struggle is even more real!
